Turpin Hills Learn to Swim & Dive Program

SUMMER 2011

Welcome to Shannon Mullett, our new Swim Lessons Manager.  In addition to her life guarding responsibilities, Shannon will register your child, coordinate the instructors, and ensure the swim lessons program runs smoothly.  Contact Shannon @ shannon.mullett@gmail.com with your questions.

 Please review the Programs and Entry Level Skills information located on this page to choose the best placement for your child.
No classes are guaranteed. All spots are first come first served.
 
 
If you do not register by the deadline, your child will not be placed in a class.
 
All Lesson will be $20.00 per child per session.
Each child must be at least 3 years of age and potty trained.
 
 All Swim Instructors this year are certified in Life Guard, First AID, CPR, and WSI. This is to ensure the safest environment for you child to learn and for the instructors to teach.

The new American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program provides instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. It is designed to give students a positive learning experience. Learn-to-Swim teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach people to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water. The new program encompasses six new levels.

The second Thursday of every session is a test out day. This is for the child to show and prove the skills learned in lessons.
Cards will be awarded on this day.
 
 
ENTRY LEVEL SKILLS
 
All of the skills must be completed consecutively and to American Red Cross Standards
 
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills Prerequisites: 
-      
No water skills required.
-       At least 3 years old and potty trained.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills Prerequisites
-     
  Enter and exit water safely.
-       Submerge mouth, nose and eyes.
-       Exhale underwater through mouth ad nose.
-       Open eyes under water, pick up submerged object.
-       Change direction while walking or paddling.
-       Roll over from front to back and back to front with support.
-       Explore floating on front and back with support.
-       Explore swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions with support.


Level 3: Stroke Development Prerequisites
-      
Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side.
-       Exit water safely using ladder or side.
-       Submerge entire head.
-       Blow bubbles submerging head in a rhythmic pattern (bobbing).
-       Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object in shallow water.
-       Float on front and back.
-       Perform front and back glide.
-       Change direction of travel paddling on front or back.
-       Roll over from front to back, back to front.
-       Tread water using arm and leg motions (chest-deep water).
-       Swim on front, back, and side using combined arm and leg actions.


Level 4: Stroke Improvement Prerequisites 
-  
     Jump into deep water from the side.
-       Dive from kneeling or standing position.
-       Submerge and retrieve an object in chest deep water.
-       Bob with the head fully submerged.
-       Rotary breathing in horizontal position.
-       Perform front and back glide using two different kicks.
-       Float on front and back in deep water.
-       Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back.
-       Tread water using hand and leg movements.
-       Perform front and back crawl.
-       Butterfly—kick and body motion.
-       Perform the HELP and Huddle position.


Level 5: Stroke Refinement Prerequisites 
-      
Perform a dive from a standing or stride position.
-       Swim underwater.
-       Perform feet-first surface dive.
-       Perform open turns on front and back.
-       Tread water using sculling arm motions and with different kicks.
-       Perform the following:
-     Front and back crawl
-      Breaststroke
-      Butterfly
-      Elementary backstroke
-     Swim on side using scissors-like kick.

Private Swim Lessons
Private swim lesions will be offered with WSI instructors that choose to do so.
Lesson rates will start $20 per half hour. 
Times may be arranged between Instructor and recipients.
 
 
Parent-Child Swim Lessons
Contact Shannon Mullett for information and scheduling.
 
 
Private Dive Lessons
Dive coach will offer Private lessons for $20 a half hour. 
Always fun to do with a friend.
